Before embarking on large, community-based studies, pilot studies of carriage will be undertaken at each centre to:

• Help investigators familiarise themselves with the standard operating procedures required for collecting samples.
• Determine the optimum method of collecting nasopharyngeal swabs for isolation of meningococci.
