World Health Organization – Epidemic and Pandemic Alert and Response Department
The Global Alert and Response Department (GAR) is placed with the Health Security and Environment at WHO Headquarters. It has six core functions, which include supporting the national capacities of Member States to prepare and respond to epidemics, supporting national and international training programs for epidemic preparedness and response, developing standardised approaches for preparedness and response to major epidemic-prone diseases (e.g. meningitis, yellow fever, plague).
GAR successfully contained recent outbreaks such as SARS, hemorrhagic fevers, yellow fever and meningitis. It works with regional offices to strengthen regional preparedness and alert and response teams supporting national capacity to ensure the most rapid and efficient field response to unexpected events.
