Swiss Tropical Institute (STI), Switzerland

The Swiss Tropical Institute (STI) was founded in 1943 as a public organisation. It is supported by the Swiss Federal Government and the Canton of Basel-Stadt. The greater part of its funding comes from competitively acquired grants and the earnings of its Service Departments.

The mandate of the STI is to contribute to the improvement of the health of populations internationally and nationally through research, services, and teaching and training by combining laboratory-based work, clinical studies and epidemiological approaches. The STI is divided into five specialist departments.

Research on communicable diseases includes development of vaccines and drugs for tropical diseases, innovative contributions to spatial statistics and studies of basic immunology, parasitology and epidemiology.

In the field of meningococcal meningitis, the institute is currently involved in long-term molecular epidemiological studies in Ghana and in Burkina Faso.
