Meningitis Vaccine Project (MVP), France
The Meningitis Vaccine Project (MVP) is a partnership between PATH and the World Health Organization (WHO) whose goal is to eliminate epidemic meningitis from sub-Saharan Africa.
The partnership received its core funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The partnership has made good progress since it was founded in 2001 in developing an effective and affordable serogroup A meningococcal conjugate vaccine for use in Africa.
The vaccine developed by MVP is being produced at the Serum Institute of India Ltd. and is in clinical trials in India and Africa where encouraging safety and immunogenicity results have been obtained. MVP will play a key role in the implementation of meningococcal conjugate vaccination in Africa, in collaboration with WHO and other partners, once the new vaccine has been licensed and prequalified by WHO.
