University of Maiduguri, Nigeria
The University of Maiduguri, situated in north-eastern Nigeria, is located within the meningitis belt and has experienced frequent epidemics of meningococcal meningitis.
The Departments of Community Medicine and Medical Microbiology have been involved in the control of these epidemics. Although the Departments have not previously undertaken carriage studies, they have a team that is competent to successfully undertake such studies and laboratory facilities on site that are able to undertake the required microbiological work including bacterial culture and serogrouping. The Department of Community Medicine has in particular carried out numerous community based medical researches similar to the MenAfriCar study. In addition it has an established relationship with five Local government areas since the past 20 years on community based medical research/activities.
