Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), Ethiopia
The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI), Addis Ababa is an research facility for infectious disease with well-equipped microbiology, immunology and molecular biology laboratories that can undertake bacterial culture, serogrouping, ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays) and standard and real-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction).
AHRI has participated in collaborative work on meningococcal strain characterisation during two epidemic seasons in North and South Ethiopia (2002-3) and in a trivalent meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (Mencevax ACW, GSK) trial.
It has built up a network of collaborators in meningococcal disease research and control, including the Ministry of Health and, internationally, with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH), Oslo.
AHRI has worked closely with staff from the Meningitis Vaccine Project (WHO/PATH) in setting up further capacity for a vaccine trial in the Butajira Rural Health Project demographic site, where the Mencevax trial was conducted.
