MenAfriCar Capacity Development in Nigeria
Capacity development is an essential component of the MenAfriCar consortium’s work. MenAfriCar is providing funding for staff from African partner institutions to undertake various training opportunities.
Aishatu Shettima is a Resident Doctor in Medical Microbiology and Parasitology at the University of Maiduguri in North Eastern Nigeria.
The MenAfriCar team at the University of Maiduguri selected Aishatu to undertake further training. As such, MenAfriCar has provided funding for her to enroll in a distance learning course through the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, part of the University of London.
Over the next few years, Aishatu will study to obtain an Msc in Infectious Diseases from the University of London. The course comprises core modules in public health, biostatistics and epidemiology, and the biology and control of infectious disease, with the subsequent opportunity for specialised study in areas of the student's own choice.
Ultimately, it is hoped that obtaining an Msc in Infectious Diseases will help further Aishatu’s career and enhance teaching and research capacity at the University of Maiduguri.
