MenAfriCar laboratory coordinator Dr Olivier Manigart moved to the MRC Unit The Gambia

MenAfriCar laboratory coordinator Dr Olivier Manigart moved to the MRC Unit The Gambia, where he will investigate ways of detecting meningococci directly from pharyngeal swabs using molecular methods. Olivier is profiled in the recent issue of the the MRC Unit’s newsletter TAMA.

During his time in The Gambia Dr Manigart will:

  • Compare different approaches to the detection of small amounts of meningococcal DNA using direct and real-time PCR techniques.
  • Compare the optimum molecular technique for detecting meningococci with conventional microbiological approaches during the course of a survey conducted in 1,000 school-children in The Gambia. This survey will be undertaken in April and May 2013.
  • Evaluate the new technique in up to three additional MenAfriCar centres if it proves to have an advantage over conventional microbiological methods.
