Monitoring the Impact of Meningococcal Vaccines in Africa, Dakar, Senegal, April 24th-25th 2012

Over two days, delegates discussed priorities for meningococcal research in Africa including evaluating the impact of MenAfriVac™ and other meningococcal vaccines in the meningitis belt. The first day included talks by leading scientists in the area of meningococcal research. On the second day, two working groups considered the epidemiological and laboratory research agendas respectively.
At the last session, research priorities identified by each group were reported and refined. The importance of surveillance was underscored by both working groups. The main conclusion of the meeting are now published in the journal Vaccine Funding for the meeting was provided by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
