Pilot Study Completed
In the latter half of 2009, the seven African centres in the MenAfriCar consortium conducted pilot studies of meningococcal carriage amongst children in Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal. The aims of this pilot study included estimating the prevalence of meningococcal carriage in school-aged children, evaluating different methods of pharyngeal swab collection, examining the risk factors associated with carriage, and finally, testing field and laboratory methodologies in preparation for future large-scale MenAfriCar surveys.
The preliminary results from the seven pilot studies were discussed at the MenAfriCar meeting in Addis Ababa in January 2010. Following discussion and comparison of data at the meeting, further laboratory analysis of data was required in some countries. This has now been completed and analysis of the data from all seven countries is underway. Final results are expected in early 2011.
