Senegal is located on the western edge of the meningitis belt. The country has been affected by a number of epidemics of meningococcal disease in the past, including those occurring in 1983, 1986 and 1998 during which high attack rates have been recorded. In 2012, 894 cases of meningitis were reported to WHO, and no districts crossed the epidemic threshold.

MenAfriCar’s collaborating centre in Senegal is the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement, Dakar.
