Epidemics of meningococcal disease are frequent in Mali. More than 1,000 meningitis cases were reported during 2004, 2006 and 2008. Although recent epidemics have been caused predominantly by serogroup A meningococci about a half of laboratory confirmed cases seen in 2003 were caused by meningococci belonging to serogroup W. Between 2009 and 2011 fewer than 500 meningitis cases were reported by Mali, with 688 cases in 2012 when group W predominated.
