MenAfriCar is supported by the Wellcome Trust and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The Wellcome Trust is the UK’s largest charity. It funds innovative biomedical research in the UK and internationally, spending over £600 million each year to support the brightest scientists with the best ideas. It devotes substantial funding to activities outside the British Isles, including funding for researchers in developing and restructuring countries who are working in the area of public health or tropical medicine.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is dedicated to bringing innovations in health and learning to the global community. The majority of the Foundation’s work in health, poverty, and development is done in Africa. The Foundation supports the Meningitis Vaccine Project’s work to develop an affordable serogroup A meningococcal conjugate vaccine for use in Africa. The effectiveness of this vaccine in interrupting transmission of meningococcal infection is being evaluated by the MenAfriCar project.
